The Importance of Good Posture
A problem that many chiropractors see in today’s society is the bad habit of sitting the wrong way for many hours that causes damage to our spine and posture.
It’s very common for one to spend hours sitting while being distracted by a phone, laptop, etc., and not many people take the time each day to properly stretch and fix their posture, or even do enough physical activity.
The common “hunched over” way of sitting is very popular, and it causes straining on the neck. Studies prove that for every inch your head is sticking out from its true center of gravity, your neck is actually holding onto an extra 10 pounds of stress. Chiropractors observe during posture evaluations that many of their patients are actually carrying their head two to three inches forwards, which is an extra 20-30 pounds of pressure on their neck. This is very dangerous for one’s spine health and bad posture will continue onto causing more pain in different parts of their body. Asthma and heart disease begin in one’s neck, so applying bad pressure to that area is not recommended. Posture can also have huge impacts on one’s memory, mood, and behavior.
Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve the pain in one’s joins and even promote better posture. On on your own, you can work on your posture by sitting properly while doing your everyday activities like watching TV, using a computer, wearing backpacks, etc. You can also perform posture exercises to help fix the position of your head and improve your mood / mental health. These exercises might include pull-ups, arm closes and circles, rows, and lateral raises, etc.
